Kuta, Lombok

I used Kuta as my base for exploring southern Lombok. The trip worked well as a low-cost independent stay built around scooter rides, beaches, surf spots, and a few day trips to waterfalls and viewpoints inland.
Kuta is noticeably smaller and quieter than Bali's main beach towns. There are enough cafes, hostels, and surf rental shops to make things easy, but it still feels compact once you leave the main strip. Most beaches are 15–45 minutes away by scooter and many still have very little development.
I averaged around 600,000 IDR per day staying in private guesthouses, eating mostly local food, renting a scooter, and occasionally paying for activities like surf lessons or waterfall entry fees. Costs drop lower on slower days or if you stay in a dorm bed.
- Kuta is around 30–40 minutes from Lombok International Airport by road.
- Dry season from May to September has the best beach weather and calmer seas. Surf conditions vary heavily by season — beginner beaches can become rough during strong swell periods.
- Scooter rental is almost essential. Public transport around southern Lombok is limited and unreliable.
- Roads around Kuta are generally good, but some beach access roads become rough and steep near the coast.
- ATMs, pharmacies, cafes, and convenience stores are easy to find in town.
- Tanjung Aan Beach is the easiest beach trip from town. Soft white sand, calm swimming conditions, and a few simple beachfront cafes. Around 20 minutes from Kuta by scooter.
- Bukit Merese is the main sunset viewpoint near Kuta. The walk from the parking area takes around 10–15 minutes and covers less than 2 km return, with coastal views the whole way. Better at sunset than midday — almost no shade on the hill.
- Selong Belanak Beach has the gentlest surf conditions in the area and suits beginners well. Surf schools and board rentals operate directly on the beach. Around 45–60 minutes by scooter from Kuta.
- Mawun Beach is quieter than the main surf beaches and works better for swimming in calmer conditions. A good stop combined with Selong Belanak.
- Mandalika Circuit hosts MotoGP and major racing events. Even outside event periods the coastal roads and beaches in the circuit area are worth riding through.
- Benang Kelambu Waterfall is a good inland day trip, though it takes around 1.5–2 hours each way. Expect stairs, jungle tracks, and slippery paths near the falls. Entry fees around 20,000–80,000 IDR.
- Pink Beach is one of the longer day trips from Kuta — roughly 2 hours each way with sections of poor road. Better suited to travellers comfortable with long scooter rides.
Transport or arrival photo caption
- Airport taxis from Lombok International Airport to Kuta usually cost around 150,000–250,000 IDR.
- Shared shuttle vans connect Kuta with Senggigi, Bangsal Harbour, and the Gili Islands.
- Fast boats from Bali often include direct shuttle transfers into Kuta.
- Public ferries from Bali arrive at Lembar Port, around 1.5–2 hours from Kuta by road.
- Scooter rental costs around 80,000–120,000 IDR per day for automatic scooters. Fuel is widely available from roadside bottle sellers and petrol stations.
- Grab and Gojek are unreliable outside airport areas in southern Lombok.
- Private drivers are useful for waterfall trips or for travellers uncomfortable riding scooters on longer distances.
- Central Kuta has the best mix of cafes, restaurants, surf hostels, and scooter rentals. Dorm beds usually cost around 120,000–180,000 IDR per night.
- Guesthouses slightly outside the centre are quieter and cheaper. Private rooms commonly range from 300,000–600,000 IDR.
- Beachfront stays are limited compared to Bali — most accommodation sits a short scooter ride inland from the beaches.
Food or market photo caption
- Local warungs serve nasi goreng, mie goreng, grilled chicken, and seafood for around 25,000–60,000 IDR per meal. Night food markets are good for cheap dinners and snacks.
- Surf cafes and brunch spots dominate the main streets. Coffee usually costs around 25,000–40,000 IDR; cafe-style meals run 70,000–120,000 IDR.
- Fresh seafood barbecue is available near some beach areas, especially on weekends.
Day-trip photo caption
- Bukit Pergasingan near Sembalun is one of the best overnight hikes on Lombok. The climb takes around 2–3 hours with around 700 m elevation gain.
- Mount Rinjani is Lombok's main trekking destination. Most summit hikes take 2–3 days and require good fitness. Guides and permits are arranged in Senaru or Sembalun.
- Secret Beaches Loop south of Kuta links Mawun, Mawi, and Selong Belanak as a self-guided scooter day trip along the southern coast.
