Senggigi, Lombok

Senggigi sits on Lombok's west coast and works best as a slower beach base. Compared to Kuta it feels more resort-oriented and less focused on surfing or backpacking, but it is more convenient for shorter holidays — beaches, restaurants, and accommodation are closer together.
The best part of the area is the coastline north of Senggigi. Once the traffic thins out past town the road becomes scenic and the beaches quieter. The west coast also faces the right direction for sunsets, and Bangsal Harbour north of town makes access to the Gili Islands straightforward.
Costs were slightly higher than southern Lombok. Most accommodation and restaurants target holiday travellers rather than backpackers, though budget guesthouses still exist inland from the beach. I averaged around 700,000 IDR per day on a mix of local meals and a mid-range guesthouse.
- Senggigi is around 2–2.5 hours from Lombok International Airport depending on traffic.
- The west coast gets better sunsets than Kuta — beaches face west toward Bali and the Gili Islands.
- Fast boat access to the Gili Islands is easier from Bangsal Harbour, north of Senggigi. Wet season rain can cause rough seas and fast boat cancellations.
- Roads north of Senggigi are scenic but narrow in sections — ride carefully on the coastal stretches.
- Senggigi Beach is the main beach in town. Better for sunsets and relaxing than swimming — conditions vary with tides and weather.
- Malimbu Hill is the best coastal viewpoint north of Senggigi. Easy roadside stop with clear views toward Bali and the Gili Islands.
- Nipah Beach is quieter than Senggigi and has calmer water during dry season. Around 20–30 minutes north by scooter.
- Pura Batu Bolong is a small coastal Hindu temple built on rocky cliffs south of Senggigi. A good quick stop around sunset.
- Gili Islands are easy day trips from Senggigi. Public boats and fast boats leave from Bangsal Harbour. Gili Air is the calmest option for a slower day; Gili Trawangan is the busiest. Fast boats cost around 85,000–250,000 IDR depending on service.
- Snorkelling trips operate along the west coast and around nearby islands. Most include multiple stops and basic lunch for around 150,000–400,000 IDR.
